Hurricanes
Hurricanes in the Pacific Ocean have less impact
on the continental United States
than those that hit the coast of the Gulf of Mexico or the Atlantic
coast. They do, occasionally strike Hawaii. The most recent powerful
hurricane to impact Hawaii
was Hurricane Iniki in 1992. It was devastating to the island of
Kauai.
Hurricanes that effect the Hawaiian Islands
are usually born off the coast
of Mexico at about the latitude of Cabo San Lucas. They move westward
often
slide northward somewhere in their track. See the track of Hurricane
Iniki for an example.
Hurricanes west of the International Date
Line are called "typhoons".
These typhoons can cause severe damage along the east coast of asia
and
in Taiwan and Japan.
